HISTORY
In 1901, the late Joseph S. Keen purchased 200 acres of land located between River Road and the Delaware River. This was a large estate with open farmland and two mansions. Throughout his lifetime, he sold different tracts of land to various families.
After his passing in 1927, the remaining tracts of land were sold or passed along to family members. In 1952, the Cunningham family was deeded approximately 15 acres of land. The State of Delaware, through condemnation, took 5.46 acres for the construction and relocation of Governor Printz Boulevard.
In February of 1976, Doverton Associates purchased the remaining 10 acres of land from the Cunningham family. In 1976, construction began on Governor House Apartments. Later, between 1987 and 1988, an additional second phase of buildings were construction on the land. Once completed, the Doverton Corporation filed to convert the property into condominiums in 1988. All units were sold to existing tenants and the general public. On September 20, 1989, Governor House Condominiums officially became the condominium community we know today.
